What are the forces on a shot put before it is released?
The major forces are applied force and force of gravity. At starting position, the shot putter places the shot put between their shoulder and their cheek. The have a lowered standing position to increase applied force from their legs. Professional players face the opposite direction from their target because they want to turn and throw to gain a torque force. As the shot putter springs forward they push and extend their arm to throw the ball with power. Before the shot put leaves the putter's hand force of gravity is acted vertically down on the ball, a diagonal force applied by the shot putter, and air resistance is applied on the ball. The average height of release is 7 ft above the ground and to set a world record of about 73 ft, scientist were able to calculate the best angle to throw is at 42.3 degrees.
